We’ve been a huge fan of graphic designer and paper artist Abigail McMurray for a while now, and when the opportunity to work with her on a special project, we couldn’t have been more excited. The creative mind behind yeiou paper objects describes herself as an “artist with an engineer’s sensibilities” and has built a reputation for intricate three-dimensional paper models and for stunning shadowboxes. For this collaboration, we wanted to highlight some of America’s great “Maker Cities” in shadowbox form, and we’ve chosen to feature Atlanta, Austin, Brooklyn, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Portland (Oregon this time, with apologies to our incredibly creative Mainer friends!). Each exclusive map design comes in an 8” square frame except for Chicago and L.A., which are in an 8” x 10” format to better accommodate their shape.
Of course, it would be shortsighted to highlight maker culture while ignoring its do-it-yourself spirit, so we’ve worked with Abigail to offer a DIY kit for anyone who wants to custom-make their own shadowbox. The kit will include a Garrett Wade Whittling Knife, a shadow box frame, three pieces of white paper, background color paper in teal, light blue and red and an instruction booklet with project ideas. You May Also Like
