Just Add Water

Just Add Water

Are you struggling to keep your plants healthy and vibrant in the summer heat? The secret lies in how you water them. To prevent your plants from wilting in the summer, they need plenty of water. But how much and how often should you be watering?

Tip 01

The Secret to Perfect Soil Moisture Levels

Check the moisture level of your soil regularly to determine when to water. Stick your finger about an inch into the soil near the plant's base. If it feels dry at that depth, it's time to water. You can also use moisture meters or install a drip irrigation system with a soil moisture sensor for more accurate monitoring.

For that perfect watering implement, our ultra-durable Stainless Steel Garden Hose comes in both 75’ and 100’, and is kink proof, puncture proof, tear and crack proof, animal proof, and corrosion and rust proof. It might just be the last hose you ever buy. You can get it on its own, or as a bundle with our Ultra-Durable Garden Hose and Rack Set.

Tip 02

Water deeply, not daily

Water deeply and infrequently: Instead of frequent shallow watering, it's better to water deeply but less often. This encourages the roots to grow deeper into the soil, making plants more resilient to drought conditions. Water until the soil is moist, at least 6 inches deep.

For both function and a gorgeous look, our Antiqued Copper Plated Watering Can is a great choice! The swooping handle provides pinpoint ergonomics for superb support and control, and the expert finish makes this look like a piece that’s been in the family for generations.

Tip 03

Water at dawn or dusk

Watering your garden in the early morning is generally the best time. The temperatures are cooler, and there's less wind, allowing the water to penetrate the soil effectively. Watering in the morning also gives the leaves and soil surface time to dry before evening, reducing the risk of fungal diseases.

For a stationary sprinkler, our French Steel & Brass Rotating Garden Sprinkler is an astoundingly versatile design. It features a heavy steel base, premium brass fittings, a huge coverage range, and is absolutely built to last. The solid machined brass heads are independently adjustable, and a single unit will cover a circular area of up to 540 sq. yards. Even better, each one has a capped connector, allowing you to chain multiple units together and cover a truly vast amount of real estate.

Tip 04

Protect leaves from disease - keep them dry

When you water, focus on delivering water directly to the base of the plants rather than spraying water overhead. This helps minimize water loss due to evaporation and ensures that the roots receive the water they need. Watering at the base also helps prevent foliage diseases caused by moisture lingering on the leaves.

For consistent watering, our Premium Watering Nozzles are truly Best-in-Class. The nozzle bodies and moving parts are precision Zamak castings (an alloy of the purest Zinc with aluminum, copper and magnesium). Our best selling Versatile Spray Mister features a shower option, plus two tighter streams for getting directly to the roots when plants are in need of hydration.

Tip 05

Prioritize deep root hydration for optimal growth

Suitable watering means that water must sufficiently reach the roots. Too-low water quantities often only cover the upper soil. Adequate watering also means that crop plants are particularly dependent upon evenly moist soil in the time until their crops are ripe for harvesting.

Going on vacation? Our Terracotta Garden Hydrators have got you covered. They will provide slow, steady watering that lasts for days. Just bury it in a planter or garden bed, leaving just the neck above the soil. As the soil around it dries, soil tension and plant roots pull the water out; when the soil around it is moist, the water stays inside the vessel. This consistent slow watering is also far better for the plants health as it creates a strong root structure. Brilliant, efficient, and simple.

Adjust your watering schedule accordingly and observe your plants for signs of overwatering or underwatering, such as wilting or yellowing leaves. Now that you know the secrets to watering your plants right, it’s time to put these tips into action. Your plants will thank you!
