Description

Coffee aficionados rave about Burr-Style grinders for one reason: they break up the bean in a more uniform size and shape (versus blade grinders), without heating them up and changing the flavor. Simply put, Burr grinders producing significantly more consistent, smooth tasting coffee. Besides effortlessly grinding coffee beans, it looks absolutely fabulous.

Made of cast iron with a beechwood base, it’s heavy enough to stay anchored while you grind. The beans fit in the reservoir at the top and a spring-tab mechanism allows you to adjust the coarseness of your grind. Turning the large wheel hand-crank produces high torque at low speed. A cone-configuration of tempered steel teeth crush the beans. When they reach the proper size, your ground coffee falls into a wooden drawer at the bottom. Expensive for sure but very special. Weighs 12 lbs., Dimensions: 13" x 8½" x 8"

All that glitters. . .

"This purchase has been an education in all things coffee. Like many here I was taken in by the stunning construction of this grinder, assuming that because it’s cast iron and Italian-made it must also turn out a consistent grind. Not so, apparently, between the jiggly shaft and subpar (if tempered steel) burr among other things…If you simply enjoy cowboy coffee and perhaps French press and have the bench space for this beauty then by all means buy it; but for my fellow budding coffee snobs who like our pour overs (or just better drip coffee) and want to branch into espresso or other experimentations, move on and keep looking. There are better, smaller and even less pricey manual grinders out there, made by companies who do coffee and only coffee (in particular a German make reminiscent of “Hogan’s Heroes”). I would think that someone could take the aesthetic of this mill grinder and combine it with updated construction and functionality, but until then we apparently must choose between a vintage look and a good cup of coffee, and I’m choosing the latter."

Best coffee mill I have

"I have seven coffee bean mills, eight if you count my camping coffee mill. They are from France, Germany, the good ‘ol USA, and China. This is the best of the bunch. It is quick, efficient, and large enough to grind all the beans for the pot without doing it in batches. My only complaint would be the price, but it was a gift. It is beautiful too and it saves me a lot of time."

Q&A

I was asking what happened to the OTHER reviews, as there used to be more than 2. I based my choice of this grinder based upon multiple positive reviews, but most of them have now disappeared. Also my second question was not answered and I am waiting for someone to contact me per my online chat.
Terry, we are looking into the missing reviews . We aren't sure why they were taken off, space maybe. Regarding the coffee grinder , I use it every day here in the office for a filtered individual cup and occasionally a french press . It seems to work best for a medium grind but not so good for very fine espresso. Thank you.
Firstly, what happened to the other reviews and questions posted here? Also why am I getting inconsistent grinds, both with French press and espresso if this is so well-made?
Terry , there are a couple of reviews on the website. Thank you.
What are the recommendations for cleaning this coffee grinder? Is disassembly required? Any other maintenance requirements?
Ray, I don't recommend disassembling the grinder. I use a stiff brush and vacuum cleaner nozzle for mine. Thank you
Can it grind grain?
Theresa, The maker does not stipulate that it can. I suspect not. Typically grain is much smaller than coffee and the burr adjustment is limited.
how much can you grind at a time.... ie, how much does the box at the bottom hold?
The grinder will hold about 3/4 cup of beans. That will fit in the drawer as well
