Description

Before the advent of the chainsaw, these large cross-cutting saws performed all log-bucking duties. That is, you would use it for sawing up the trunks of large, felled trees into smaller pieces that would then be split. The power produced by the 36" long, 1.5 mm thick blade, can be used to easily saw through wet and dry logs. The aggressive teeth are filed and set for cross cutting, with deep gullets every third tooth to form the so-called Great American pattern, which self-clears debris and dust as you work. The first 5" of the blade are smaller, starter teeth. Slight rocker curve allows for smooth action. Designed for one-man operation, with a special 6" long screw-on auxiliary handle for two-hand usage. Both handles are made of beech. Best for wide diameter trunks. The Great American is a quieter, greener, and safer option than gas powered chainsaws. Teeth come presharpened.

Great quality

"Just what my husband was looking for. Great quality. Worth the price."

Quality Construction, Light Weight

"Right out of the box I cut a 16 inch diameter hickory in 15 minutes. I’m 75 years old so a younger person could probably do it faster. I admire the minimalist design of the handle attachment. However, I lost the pin the first time I took the handle off. The pin dropped into soft fluffy snow and could not be recovered. I was clearing blowdowns on a local hiking trail and had to saw without the upright handle. I’ll take an extra pin next time out! For now the shipping box works well as a sheath."

I have not yet used

"I have not yet used it, but expect it to be as excellent as the other Garrett Wade products I have bought."

WENDY E. (5/5)

Thumbs up

"The saw is made of quality materials and performs well. Despite repeated tightening's the pin to peg handle fell out and was lost. I've replaced it with a longer similar gauged machine screw."

Bought it to cut 18-20""

"Bought it to cut 18-20"" diameter logs for chopping firewood, since my bow saw couldn't cut all the way through. Maybe it is my technique, but I find it a little wobbly and unwieldy to use solo. I also think I need to use a wax of some sort to prevent binding up inside the log. Works great on smaller trees, branches, and logs though."

High performance tree saw

"Finally, I have found a hand saw that can do the job of quickly felling a tree. The 3 ft. 1 man crosscut saw is now the finest hand saw in my tree felling arsenal. It is of quality materials and exceptionally well engineered. Point set and spacing are precise. This saw is the type of saw which was used by tree professionals for decades before chainsaws. Thank you Garrett Wade."

Q&A

How much does the saw weigh? I use men's large glove. Will the handle accommodate a man's large ands with a a leather work glove on it? Thanks
Hey Brian, Thanks for your question - sorry for the delay. The Saw weighs 3 lbs. Regarding the gloves, we would say no. We tried using it with work gloves and even with medium-sized hands with gloves, they wouldn't fit. Let us know if you have further questions. Thanks!
This is a test question from Chris Z
Hey Chris - good question...
Does it come presharpened
Yes.
Interested in the 3 Ft. 1 Man Crosscut Saw, largely for cutting pine trees. I understand Lance tooth is preferable to Tuttle for pine and I'm curious what tooth the "Great American Pattern" is? I'm left-handed and assume there is no difference in the saw - correct? I'll be using the saw one-handed but, just in case, is the second handle that attaches to the top of the blade included? Regards,
Jack, The Grate American Tooth pattern is designed for dry, medium to hard woods. Cannot find any definitive answer on how it would work on pine. Sorry!
what kind of file do you recommend for sharpening this kind of saw? Do you sell them by chance? Thank you very much
Sorry but we do not stock saw files. I have included a link for a file that I think is appropriate for that saw https://www.canadianoutdoorequipment.com/flat-saw-file.html
