Meet the Maker
Harry Gerstner was twenty-two, fresh from a four-year woodworking apprenticeship, when he built a tool chest as a side project. It caught on. With a hundred-dollar bonus he started a company — and named it “H. Gerstner & Sons” because it sounded established, though he would go on to raise three daughters and never have a son.
More than a century later the company is still family-owned and still building chests from Harry’s original drawings. Of the twenty-some workshops making wooden tool chests in his day, Gerstner is the only one left. This particular chest is part of the Gerstner International line — built to Harry’s designs in Gerstner’s own overseas factory, in a special run for Garrett Wade, finished in dark oak veneer and felt-lined exactly as he intended.
My brother and I were paid a penny apiece to stuff envelopes when we were little kids.
Kim Campbell Brown — Harry Gerstner’s Great-Granddaughter
The Design
Open this chest and the first thing you notice is the felt. Every one of the six drawers is lined with it — a detail Harry built in from the beginning to protect precision instruments from nicks, dust, and rust. It is the reason a tool kept in a Gerstner comes out looking the way it went in. Four of the drawers are shallow, at 1¼″ tall, and two run deeper at 2¼″, so there is a home for everything from fine files to bulkier hand tools.
The rest of the design has barely changed because it never needed to: chromed steel hardware, corner protectors, a leather carry handle, and a top that lifts to reveal a 1⅓″ compartment. Best of all, every drawer locks automatically the moment the lid comes down — and opens again with one of the two included keys.
Beyond the Workshop
It is sold as a tool chest, and it is a fine one — sized at 12 x 8 x 14″ tall for the smaller, hobby-type tools you want kept secure and organized. But customers keep finding other uses for those felt-lined drawers. A knife collection on display. Three hundred colored pencils, sorted at last. Coins, jewelry, watches, art supplies, the contents of a textile room.
That is the quiet versatility of the design. Utilitarian in purpose, heirloom in feel — the kind of piece that earns a spot on a desk, a dresser, or a living-room shelf as easily as a workbench, and gets handed down rather than thrown out.
