It had to have at least one deep drawer, which the Gerstner storage chest has. While the chest I already owned is constructed and finished well, I was pleased to find that the Gerstner was constructed to a higher quality and finish. It’s a bit pricey but seemingly worth the money. I’m very happy with the chest!

Meet the Maker

One Family, One Design, Since 1906

Harry Gerstner was twenty-two, fresh from a four-year woodworking apprenticeship, when he built a tool chest as a side project. It caught on. With a hundred-dollar bonus he started a company — and named it “H. Gerstner & Sons” because it sounded established, though he would go on to raise three daughters and never have a son.

More than a century later the company is still family-owned and still building chests from Harry’s original drawings. Of the twenty-some workshops making wooden tool chests in his day, Gerstner is the only one left. This chest belongs to the Gerstner International line — built to Harry’s designs in Gerstner’s overseas factory, in special runs for Garrett Wade — so the lineage that began in Dayton reaches a far more accessible price.

The Design

Three Drawers, a Felt Top, and a Cover That Knows to Get Out of the Way

The case is oak, the drawer sides pine, the drawer bottoms laminate — the practical mix Gerstner has always used for a chest that has to take daily handling without complaint. Every drawer is lined with traditional felt, so a precision square, a folding knife, or a pair of eyeglasses comes out the way it went in.

Across the top sits a full-surface felt tray — a place to dump whatever’s in your hands the moment you walk in. It’s the kind of small, obvious idea that you only appreciate once you live with it. The front cover locks, and when you open the chest it slides cleanly out of the way instead of fighting you for counter space.

Beyond the Workshop

Excellent for the Shop. Too Handsome to Keep There.

This is a high-capacity chest, ideal for storing high-quality hand tools — but it’s modestly sized and good-looking enough to sit comfortably on any surface in the house. Owners keep wallets, multiple pairs of eyeglasses, notepads, rulers, a passport, personal papers, pen trays, even a small laptop in it: the slightly bulky stuff you need to run your life and want quick access to.

One customer gave it to her husband for his knife collection. Another uses it for sewing-machine accessories, scissors, and pins, parked on the back of the sewing table. Wherever it lands, the three felt-lined drawers stay organized and the lock keeps everything secure.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked

This is the Gerstner International line — built to Harry Gerstner’s original designs in Gerstner’s own overseas factory, in special runs for Garrett Wade. You get the recognizable Gerstner design, an oak exterior, and felt-lined locking drawers at a far more accessible price than the American-made solid-hardwood chests built in Dayton, Ohio.
The chest measures 25¼″ × 11¼″ × 9″ overall. It has three drawers, each 23½″ × 8″, in two depths — either 1½″ or 2½″ deep — so you can sort low-profile items from bulkier ones.
Yes. The front cover is lockable and slides out of the way when the chest is open. Lock the cover and the contents of all three drawers are secured.
The chest is made of oak, with pine drawer sides and laminate drawer bottoms. Every drawer is lined with traditional felt, and there is a full-surface felt tray across the top. Imported.
Both. It is excellent for hand tools in the shop, but it is handsome and modestly sized enough for a family room, home office, or bedroom. Customers use it for eyeglasses, watches, knife collections, sewing supplies, passports, and everyday papers — the bulky stuff you want secure and within reach.

Reviews

organize small tools and gadgets in my home office

"My wife gifted me an oak storage chest several years ago. It sits atop a set of drawers, and organizes small handtools, battery testers, hearing aid accessories, small gadgets and devices, phone accessories, etc. On the green felt top, I operate chargers and small devices. It's attractive, the drawers operate pretty smoothly, and it makes me smile when I use it."

Gerstner Oak Storage Chest

"I needed a “Basement” section to complete the two piece cabinet I recently purchased. It had to have at least one deep drawer, which the Gerstner Storage chest has. And, while the two piece chest I already owned is constructed and finished well, I was pleased to find that the Gerstner was constructed to a higher quality and finished. It’s a bit “pricey” but seemingly worth the money. I’m very happy with the chest!"
