A Gerstner dark oak chest with its felt-lined drawers fanned open
H. Gerstner & Sons · Dayton, Ohio

Meet the Maker

One Family, One Design, Since 1906

Harry Gerstner was twenty-two, fresh from a four-year woodworking apprenticeship, when he built a tool chest as a side project. It caught on. With a hundred-dollar bonus he started a company — and named it “H. Gerstner & Sons” because it sounded established, though he would go on to raise three daughters and never have a son.

More than a century later the company is still family-owned and still building chests from Harry’s original drawings. Of the twenty-some workshops making wooden tool chests in his day, Gerstner is the only one left. The dark oak chests in this collection carry that lineage forward — felt-lined, hand-fitted, and made to be the last tool chest you ever buy.

Two Pieces, One Tower

Built to Stand Alone — Designed to Stack

This is two complete Gerstner units sold together at a single set price. The bottom is the 33″ Rolling Cabinet: oak veneer on every face and edge, five generously sized drawers on jointed hardwood drawer slides, protective corner hardware, and a fold-down leaf along the side that gives you an extra work surface when you need one and tucks away when you don’t. It rides on five 5″ rubber casters — two of which swivel fully and lock, so the cabinet stays exactly where you set it.

On top sits Gerstner’s largest lockable top chest, the “Solutions” Chest: 24-1/2″ tall, with five full-width drawers, six half-width drawers, and a tray at the top. Every drawer automatically locks closed the moment the lid comes down. By design the two pieces stack perfectly — together they reach 57″ tall, casters included — or live apart on a bench and beside a desk. Either way, it’s a lifetime of organized, lockable storage in one matched set.

What You’re Buying

The Gerstner Name, Made Attainable

Let’s be clear about what this set is. The 1906 story, the Dayton workshop, the four generations — that is the heritage of the Gerstner company. This particular pair belongs to the Gerstner International line: built to Harry’s original designs in Gerstner’s own overseas factory, finished in dark oak veneer, in a special run made for Garrett Wade.

That distinction is exactly why a matched two-piece set like this is even possible at this price. You get the recognizable Gerstner design, the felt-lined drawers, the automatic locking, and the corner-protected oak look — without the cost of the solid-hardwood chests still hand-built in Ohio. It’s remarkably well made, and it’s offered at a special set price while quantities last. At a deal like this, the matched pair sells out fast.

Frequently Asked

No. This is the Gerstner International line — built to Harry Gerstner’s original designs in Gerstner’s own overseas factory, in a special run for Garrett Wade. Yes. All of the Solutions chest’s drawers automatically lock closed when the top is shut. Two of the cabinet’s five rubber casters swivel fully and lock so the whole tower stays put when you want it stationary.
