For splitting lumber rounds into firewood, you can’t beat our Splitting Maul and Pickaroon. The Maul has an extra thick neck and red steel safety collar to resist damage from overstrikes. The forged steel head weighs about 4 lbs and has a pair of raised cheeks that function like small wedges. The Pickaroon has a curved-beak forged-steel head that you drive into a log in order to pull, fling, roll and pitch them where needed. Both tools feature 31"-long American hickory. Commissioned at a third-generation German foundry, these two exceptional tools will make your firewood tasks easier.

Through Water Oak like butter
"We had to take down a tree that found it's space and sunlight over the house. The rounds left behind broke the splitting axe I had so I ordered the Maul and Pickaroon which arrived two days later. The Pair turned the larger and remaining rounds to seasoning firewood with ease!"
Worth the money
"The pickaroon is the perfect length for correcting splits and smaller rounds without having to bend over. The hook on the head is also very nicely designed to hold its position in the wood fiber. The splitting axe feels very good in hand and is much easier to split with due to the relatively light weight. Similar to other users, I experienced a crack in the handle right behind where the metal collar stops. This occurred while splitting Red Oak. It would be nice to have a collar that goes all the way around (like Ochsenkoph mauls). Either way, customer service at Garrett Wade made it right and sent out a new handle and all the required wedges to re-hang the head. I will probably epoxy the collar on - or leave it off all together since I believe the screw (mounting the collar) helped the handle split. Would recommend both products.
