Description
Long one of our bestselling, most popular items, the Yankee Screwdriver was first marketed by North Brothers Manufacturing Company in 1899. It was in continuous production from various makers until Stanley UK stopped producing in in the early 2000’s. We’ve sold it since our founding in 1975 and have always been huge fans of its functionality and elegance.
We decided to bring it back, and we think, better than ever. The mechanics are similar to our equally lauded Yankee Push Drill: pressing down on the spring-loaded handle rotates the force to turn the bit in the chuck. A very cool system developed decades ago that generates a lot of power. Repeated presses drives in your screw with minimal effort, and a simple flick of a switch reverses the gearing for loosening and removing screws. Includes six, single sided bits to cover most common uses: Philips Head 1 (PH1), PH2, PH3, Flathead 4.5, Flathead 5.5, Flathead 7.0. We’ve built ours with a quick-change standard hex bit holder so it will accept any standard hex bits from your collection. The Garrett Wade model is identical to in function to previous models apart from the addition of a brass chuck, which we quite like. Measures 9 ¾” closed and 12 ½” extended. Welcome back!

YANKEE screwdriver
"The highest quality anywhere Garret Wade has highest quality."
Bearing that holds bit will vanish if dropped.
"This is a really great tool. Don't even dare drop it though. The ball bearing hat holds the bits in will disappear. Making it so the bit will never stay in. Ive owned one and dropped it and the bearing vanished. Garrett Wade replaced it under warranty then the next one did the exact same thing after it was dropped. I plan on getting another one since I loved this tool but plan on putting a lanyard on it so it can never fight gravity again."
Works and looks great.
"Works and looks great."
All in one, and easy!
"Takes the place of a bunch of screwdrivers that never seem to be the one I need. Easy to operate."
Indispensible Tool!
"My grandfather gave my father a Yankee over 70 years ago. I stole that Yankee form my dad and used it for decades. It eventually wore out and I replaced it with the new one offered by Garrett Wade. The updated quick-change bit holder makes the tool even better. While this could be called and ""old time"" tool, it is still very relevant. Screw guns are great for dry wall and framing work, but for fine cabinet and furniture work, they can be too powerful, driving the screw too far or snapping off the head. The Yankee allows the user to feel the torque and to gauge whether the drilled hole is too small or too large. I use one every day in my shop, and it is a standard part of every course I teach. I have repaid my dad by giving one of these to several makers who are starting their own shops. I wouldn't be without one."
Yankee Screwdriver A # 1
"The screw driver is a pleasure to use both for putting in and taking out screws. Its compact and has no batteries to go dead. Thanks for bringing forward a new version of this tool"
Yankee Screwdriver Suggestions
"1: A yankee style screwdriver I own from the 1940's had a hollowed out handle with a screw-on metal cap. This served as a storage location for the extra bits. If you ever revise this tool I suggest you consider this change. 2: Another suggestion: Certain tasks like respoking bicycle wheels would greatly benefit from a longer version of this. 40 years ago I had a yankee screwdriver with about a 12"" to 14"" throw. This saved several minutes respoking a wheel and made the results much more consistent. 3: The quality of this tool is exceptional. Thanks!"
I love it, great buy
"I love it, great buy at a good price"
Yankee hand drill
"The best hand tool I've ever invested in. The weight and precision is perfect. It's one of my favorite tools to use on my job of installs!"
Amazing
"High quality product. Amazing. Highly recommended. You pay for quality like this. Thank you!"
Q&A
- Where is the metal yankee screwdriver made?
- Joe, Its made in Taiwan.
- Can drill bits be used with the Yankee screw driver, making it a two in one tool?
- Albert, drill bits wont work in the Yankee screwdriver but there is a Push drill on the Garrett Wade website that works well for drilling holes by hand
- Could the screwdriver also be used as a drill or vice versa? I can't quite justify the expense of both tools.
- Dear Shawn, That item is a Yankee Push drill only. We have the Yankee Screwdriver but that does not work well used as a drill.
- Hi … other than the plastic handle, could you tell me what is the difference between this and the plastic handle Yankee model… are the dimensions different? Thanks —/ these look like GREAT screwdrivers.
- This one is all-metal construction and overall a far superior tool. The plastic version is light-duty and for small screws. This one is great for a wide range of screws day after day.
