Carpenter’s Brace Drill Details

This is a classic 9" Carpenter's Brace. Pulling the standard four-jaw chuck off (as shown) exposes a 1/2" drive on which you can mount all standard 1/2" mechanic's socket drives. Our brace and bit set also has the added feature of being able to add six drivers, including three slotted 5/16 to 1/2" and three Phillips #2, #3, and #4 (sold separately). We also sell a complete version of the Versatile Socket Brace + 6 Drive Set.

For complete versatility, you can use standard hex bits or a three-jaw auxiliary chuck to grip round shank bits best. We carry a set of 6 Heavy Duty Socket Drives you can also apply to your brace.

Overall rating: 4.5405407 / 5 from 37 reviews.

Looks great

"It's what I needed"

Versatile brace with multiple chucks

"I bought this because I wanted a smaller swing when drilling smaller holes, and I liked the versatility of swapping the chucks. It works exactly as I hoped, and operates smoothly after lubricating the various moving bits with a drop of oil. Chucks interchange easily and hold tapered square shank, round and hex bits well. I’d love for it to have nice wooden handles, but that ship sailed long ago. All in all, I’m happy with the purchase, and the service from Garrett-Wade was, as usual, superior. (I’m going to assume a 10 in the customer satifaction rating is good, if not, swap to the other end. :)"

Old Style Tools Work!

"Needed to drill six 1/2 inch diameter holes through 2 inch pressure treated lumber. I tried my new brace because the chuck on my handheld electric drill wouldnt open that far. The bit I was using was for my drill press. The holes drilled easily by hand. Its was a quiet process. I could hear the bit chewing through the wood with every turn. The bit used was a brad point bit, not an auger bit with a lead screw. The auger bit would have been faster but someone borrowed that bit and never returned it. The brace worked great!"

Solution to a change in tools

"This works with standard bit shanks as an alternative to the old style brace and bits."

Good for smaller holes.

"I like this to drill smaller holes with a socket to hex adapter. But as soon as I need to drill larger holes, like, 3/4-inch or more, I have to use the chucks, and as one reviewer noted, the chucks are pretty cheap. The ratchet brace is pretty cool, a little floppy, but still cool in that it drills smaller holes perfectly fine. As Rex K on Youtube noted, yes, the brace is a little cheap quality-wise and it's a little shakey, but it works well and is versatile for most things."

Carpenter Brace with Optional Three Jaw Chuck

"Although the socket is a little wobbly for drilling, it is still fine for most uses. Of course the socket is very versatile, especially offering a three jaw chuck."

Useful for it’s price point

"Very versatile brace that hits the sweet spot size wise. Although I’d be interested to see a Compact 6” or less sweep version in the future. The socket adapter turned out to be way more useful for various adapters than I anticipated. The general build quality is on par with a $20 tool, so it’s currently priced at its upper limit in my opinion for its quality. However is completely functional and worth purchasing for use & abuse situations. Just don’t expect it to compare to your grandfather’s tried & true from back in the day."

Dooms Day Drill

"I bought this as a SHTF drill. It’s well made except the cheapest plastic possible on the handles. Oh well, hopefully I’ll be able to construct stuff in Armageddon."

Remember Socket Drives Wobble

"I wanted to give this four stars because I was a little shocked by how wobbly it is with a bit on a 1/2” drive, but to be fair, I knew it was a 1/2” drive and I should have thought about that beforehand. In the end, I decided this is a fine tool even with the wobble, and it deserves 5 stars for the fair price and quality, and let’s face it, rarity. There are not many new braces on the market, and the 1/2” drive is a killer feature, even if it means wobble by default."

I work with children and

"I work with children and this is a tool that I feel safe letting them use with supervision. I used it during a project where the students engineered robots made from cardboard and other odds and ends. there were lots of holes to drill and using the tool was more fun than playing with their newly made toys."
