Meet the Maker: Shallow Creek Woodcraft

Hello, I’m Ashley, the artist behind Shallow Creek Woodcraft. I am based in York County, Pennsylvania. I began growing an interest as a new wife and mother trying to find affordable furniture for our home. I could not find pieces with the character I was envisioning that fit the budget. On the hunt I went for vintage furniture from thrift stores and yard sales that needed repair. From that point I took investment in the proper ways to repair and preserve pieces. It did not take long to fall in love with the details, history, and connection to material that woodworking offered as I continued to seek information. I repaired pieces intermittently and read lots of woodworking books over the years while caring for my four children. When my family moved to our current home there was plenty of space to make my own and Shallow Creek Woodcraft was born.

The vision for my work, designing my pieces, and becoming more focused in my technique evolved nearly three years ago utilizing my shop space. I currently take private commissions and hope to expand how many I take on as my skills continue to grow. Clean, crisp details finished by hand that feel good to the touch are a goal in my work. My ultimate mission is to create unique crafted items while maintaining the traditions of the craft.

The smells of wood, the sounds of a sharp plane and the constant desire to hone more skills fulfills me. I love that woodworking offers the opportunity for lifelong learning; this draws me to the craft and is truly a labor of love. Building furniture has given me the opportunity to become comfortable with failing and trying again. Learning to repair mistakes, finding ways to work around a roadblock and watching a piece come to life from my hands is beyond rewarding. I also love sharing what I have learned and watching others grow a passion. Along with growing my personal woodworking skills I hope to have more opportunities to teach after having the position of Studio Assistant for a Fundamentals of Woodworking class at Penland School of Craft. I would especially love to teach other traditionally underrepresented budding woodworkers.
