Reviews

Must give 5 Stars

"Or Garrett Wade won’t print your review! This is cheap junk from Taiwan: the die looks like a cheap aluminum alloy (“pot metal”) and it sits in a flimsy wood mount that is likely not even pine, let alone any stronger wood you might expect. The tap is also cheap looking and over-painted, but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve used the die, though: it cuts (or rather, chips away) some rough threads lacking smooth contours. This is a mediocre 2-star product that Garrett Wade wants to lie about by publishing only 5-star reviews. Don’t be fooled. And if you want quality, pay for it. Somewhere else!"

wooden threads

"I've been wanting to make wooden vise screws and screws for other woodworking projects but had heard a lot of conflicting info on threadbox quality. I tried a test on a scrap piece of dowel after first making a sample thread with the tap. the result was very close, with a couple slight adjustments of the cutter the results were right on. I used a mix of boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits to lubricate the wood. The quality of the thread box and tap set are very good."

extra cutters

"I purchased a couple different sized thread sets but wanted some extra cutters just in case! The original cutters in the thread boxes are still very sharp, but when they need sharpening I can swap them out for a new cutter and keep working and sharpen the other cutter when I have time. All the cutters in the thread boxes and extra cutters came with a very sharp edge."

vise screw

"I purchased both the 1 and 1 1/2 sets plus extra cutters, and with just a couple of adjustments of the cutter on the thread box was able to get a very good result. Compared to buying some premade wooden screws kits (which can be very costly) these tools allow me to make screws to the lengths that I need."

Follow the exact instructions.

"As stated in the very brief instructions, the threads cut best on hard, closed grain wood. Tries on red oak, even after prolonged oil soaking were not good, barely usable. There are YouTube videos about setting the cutter in the threading box."

Tap and Die Wood Threading set, 1 inch

Heck Yeah!

"I’d read a lot about making wooden screws in my research to find a technique that is both easy and relatively inexpensive. I learned the best types of wood as well as how to soak the dowels in oil before cutting the threads. I thought I knew how to do it. So after receiving the 1 1/4” tap and die set from Garrett Wade, I set two 1 1/4” pieces of dowel from HD to soak in Boiled Linseed Oil. THIS WAS A MISTAKE! Boiled Linseed oil is sealant and finish product. It has chemicals included to speed drying time. Raw Linseed Oil is actually the type of oil to use if Linseed Oil is what you decide to use. Mineral Oil has been suggested most often. All that said, I pulled the first dowel, poplar, and started cutting. One minute later I had a perfect screw rod. After that I tried the oak dowel. First issue was that the dowel was SLIGHTLY TOO BIG and I had to put it on the lathe to shave it down. The spinning lathe exasperated the Boiled Linseed Oil mistake and the dowel was pretty dry by the time it was ready. But guess what? It turned out great. A little bit of VERY small chip out in a few places, but given the errors I made I’m sayin’ heck yeah! Finally, great product but also great service and fairly quick delivery. Thanks Garrett Wade."

Q&A

Is there a 16mm size tap and die available?
Rick, the taps and dies are in inches. We have a 1/2" and a 3/4" . 16mm is about 5/8" so falls in between the two. Thank you.
Good morning Does your 1/2 inch wood tap and dye set make 8 threads per inch?
Bob, the threads are 1/8" apart and therefore , yes, 8 per inch. Thanks
Hi, do you ship to the uk? Thank you.
Sorry, we do not ship to the UK
I am looking for a wood thread cutter that will cut the same threads as a broom handle. The information I have searched say it's 3/4 " 5 tpi. What threads does your 3/4" cut? Thanks
Our Wood threading tools from 3/4 " and up are 6 tpi. I beleive you are correct, broom handles are 5 tpi. Our 1/2" set is 8 tpi.
