With classic carpenter’s pencils, form equals function. There are practical reasons why they are more rectangular and substantial in the hand compared to school pencils. The thickness and flat shape derive their purpose from functional necessity – they’re thick so you know it’s there when wearing safety gloves, and rectangular so it won’t roll away from you in tight or high spots on the job.
