The Southern Craftsmen Holiday Picks

Seven years ago Tyler took his first shot at building a few pieces of furniture to furnish the new apartment he and his wife were about to move into. That hobby turned into a part-time side hustle, then a full-time side hustle, and now a full time career. He now runs a full-time wood shop in New Albany, Indiana and manages three woodworking businesses: The Southern Craftsmen, Family Furniture Co, and Wood Table bases.

He and his team build and ship furniture all throughout the country while creating educational and fun content for others to help them grow their businesses and craft.

TYLER'S HOLIDAY PICKS:

Garrett Wade No.4 Smoothing Plane

Good quality hand-planes are an investment and not something you want to replace often. The No. 4 smoothing plane from Garret Wade came with a sharp bevel, flat sole, and comfortable grip. This specific no.4 plane size is a very universal hand-plane that should be in every woodworker's tool kit. It's small and compact so it works well for fine joinery, but also has the ability to handle flattening larger surfaces with proper technique.

Cabinetmaker's Wood Chisel Set

We've worked with quite a few different sets of bench chisels in our shop ranging from cheap big-box store sets to higher end boutique sets. The Cabinet Maker Wood Chisel set definitely falls in the higher-end set of chisels that would be great for any woodworker creating fine joinery. Each of the chisels were extremely sharp and ready to use straight away and provided a consistently sharp bevel after extended use. A good set of chisels is essential to any woodshop, and these ones from Garret Wade could make a cabinet maker/woodworker happy for a very long time!

CNC Machined Precision Layout Squares

Accurate layout tools are essential to any woodshop. I recently got my hands on the 7" and 12" machined precision layout squares by IGaging sold by Garret Wade, and they are quickly becoming my favorite layout squares in the shop. These are loaded with extra features like a magnetic base, markings for 16 and 32 scales (with fractions) and all major angles, as well as marking holes every 1/16". If you know someone who does any woodworking and you want to give them a gift they'll actually use, this square set would make the perfect present!

Forged Drawknives Set

We work with live edge slabs in our shop fairly often, and removing bark is one of those tasks that can be difficult with certain species of wood without the right tools. Removing bark and cleaning live edges with any of the Matched Forges Drawknives from Garret Wade is quick, easy, and provides great results.

These drawknives can be used for shaping other components or helping break down rough lumber/logs as well. The tools were sharp and ready to use upon arrival and the leather holster that comes with each drawknife is a nice addition as well to keep the blades sharper and undamaged for longer so you can spend less time sharpening and more time working.
